Types of shoulder pain and their causes
The shoulder joint is incredibly mobile, which makes it more prone to injury. It relies on a delicate balance of strength, mobility, and stability across several joints and muscles. When that balance is thrown off, even slightly, pain and dysfunction can follow.
When you consult with Pro-Form physio for shoulder pain, we ensure to accurately diagnose the specific type and underlying causes of shoulder pain in order to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
Some common causes of shoulder pain include:
-
Damage or irritation to the group of muscles and tendons that stabilise your shoulder, often causing pain with lifting or reaching overhead.
-
Inflammation or pinching of soft tissues in the shoulder, leading to sharp pain during movement, especially when raising your arm.
-
A condition where the shoulder becomes stiff and painful, with a gradual loss of movement over time.
-
Slouched posture or uneven muscle strength can place extra strain on the shoulder, leading to ongoing discomfort and tightness.
-
Damage to the cartilage (labrum) that helps stabilise the shoulder joint, often causing clicking, weakness, or a feeling of the shoulder “giving way.”
-
Pain that originates in the neck or upper spine but is felt in the shoulder, often linked to nerve irritation or joint stiffness.
How Proform Physiotherapy Can Help
Your shoulder pain has a story, we read it.
Most clinics chase symptoms. We trace the thread, from how you move, to how you load, to why the pain showed up in the first place.
WE LISTEN, THEN WE LOOK
Every shoulder tells us something different. We assess your movement, strength and biomechanics to build a clear picture of what's driving your pain — not just where it hurts, but why.
TARGETED HANDS-ON TREATMENT
Your physio will use a combination of manual therapy, dry needling and joint mobilisation, chosen specifically for your presentation, not pulled from a template.
STRENGTH THAT LASTS
We build a rehab plan around your life, designed to restore stability, reduce load on the shoulder and lower the chance of it coming back. You'll know exactly what you're doing and why.
Get back to doing what you love, sooner
This is the Proform approach.
We don't hand you a sheet of exercises and send you on your way. You'll work with a physio who explains what's happening, adjusts the plan as you progress, and holds themselves to the same standard you'd expect from any high-performance team.
